Jamiat e Ulama e Islam (JUI) is in fact continuation of the Jamiat e Ulama e Hind (JUH). JUH was formally launched during 1919 in undivided India by the ulama (religious scholars) of the Deobandi School of thought. The party, since its inception, believed in democratic and peaceful struggle for the independence of the homeland from the British shackles. The Ulama traditionally have a great influence on the masses and hence the JUH played a very important role in ousting the British from India.
